The Story of the Pioneers, the Spearhead of PEN LHK at the Site Level

\" The new approach in managing forests and forest areas, which shifted from contract workers to community group workers, has created pioneering leaders of the green social movement \"

[FORDA] _The National Economic Recovery (PEN) of Environment and Forestry (LHK) program has been running. The labor-intensive approach is implemented as a community empowerment strategy around the forest. The pioneers at the site level became the spearhead.

The belief in the importance of preserving nature for the sustainability of life and the future of their children and grandchildren has become their biggest spirit to continue working tirelessly in the field. Their initiatives, contributions and hopes are narrated in the book \"Pioneers at sites: Pioneers of National Economic Recovery, Environment and Forestry.\"

This 110-page book summarizes the stories about 49 pioneers from various PEN LHK locations in Indonesia. They are the pioneers of peat and mangrove conservation, forest food production, community business and industry, traditional tourism, field organizers, as well as strong women who are pillars of the household economy. Not only men, women are also involved and play an important role in decision making and management of forests and forest areas where they live.

The process of pioneers and their work initiatives both individually and groups can be read in this book. It is also implied that the community at the site level actually has strong power. Therefore, it should be reckoned as a conservation resource for forests and the environment in Indonesia.

\" The new approach in managing forests and forest areas, which shifted from contract workers to community group workers, has created pioneering leaders of the green social movement,\" said Dr. Siti Nurbaya, Minister of Environment and Forestry in the book.

According to her, forest communities have strong anthropological, historical, religious and economic relations with nature. Decisions on forests and forest areas have strong impacts on these communities, both in terms of benefits and disadvantages. Local wisdom will become the basis of thinking and action for forest and forest area management.

Social and natural selection have stimulated group pioneers, provided actual examples, and even illustrated endurance and adaptation to nature. In the future, Minister Siti is confident that these green pioneers will become social activists in their homes, forests and forest areas at the site level.

FORDA of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, which monitor and evaluate PEN LHK activities, presents this book as a reflection. There are 74 PEN LHK activities, dedicated to improving the environment and forestry, by stimulating national economy restoration. Various incentives are provided to the community, including dispensation/relaxation, creation of opportunities for access to food crop, and economic access, while maintaining accountability.

From field observations it is known that this approach has raised ideas and initiatives pioneers to conserve forests and the environment. Their stories in this book, not only give colors to the implementation of PEN LHK 2020, but also can be important lessons to improve the success of PEN LHK 2021.

\"No matter how small the steps you take for the preservation of nature, this every step will also give you valuable rewards that no one can afford,\" said one pioneer. This raises the belief, that the future of better forest and the environment lies ahead. Together we can achieve sustainable forests and prosperous communities. * (DP)
